Poster Design Contest: Calling All Artists!

Surfrider SD is excited to be hosting the 20th Annual Paddle For Clean Water this year in Ocean Beach. Mark your calendars now for Sunday September 18th and we'll see you there.

Since the 20th Annual is a big round number we want to make this an extra special event and get as many people involved as possible. We want to start right now by reaching out to our supporters to help you develop our event artwork this year. It will be used on hundreds of posters, thousands of postcards, hundreds of t-shirts and more. Click Here for examples of past event artwork.

We would love to see your talents, please submit a draft of your '20th Annual Paddle For Clean Water' poster design by Friday, April 15th. Here are the guidelines:

1. Each participant may submit up to three entries and entry is free of charge.

2. Your original poster design file must be in CMYK color mode, 18×24 (inches) as an Illustrator “.ai” file or ".jpg". If you win you will be asked to send the layered original file for verification purposes and also a high resolution PDF version for printing. Keeping it to four colors or fewer helps us keep the printing costs down. The final design must incorporate the new SurfriderSD logo, email if you would like it in advance.

** A basic jpg or tiff for the draft is ok, but an ai, pdf or eps final version would be needed if you win. **

3. SurfriderSD assumes all entries are original creations and the work and property of the entrant with all rights granted therein. The participant retains the copyright of the submitted image.

4. The winner of the contest will be decided by our chosen panel of judges consisting of the SurfriderSD Executive Committee and other chapter leaders. The judges’ votes will be based on the following criteria:

- Overall Creativity and Concept
- Visual impact
- Event Recognition, is it easy to understand what the event is about immediately?

** Ten finalists will win a SurfriderSD gift reusable bag filled with goodies!! **

5. Focus on your design and don't worry about getting the text exactly right. We can work with the winner on text and finer details for the final versions. Feel free to email if you have any questions.

Please email your submission to info@surfriderSD.org and thanks for your support!

Paddle 'round the pier course

As always, safety is #1 priority at the Surfrider Foundation Paddle For Clean Water. The paddle around the pier is approx. one mile and takes people between 20 and 60 minutes to complete. Pace yourself, take it easy and enjoy the great vibes! Please note that while this is a non-competitive event it is still very strenuous and not for the faint-of-heart.

At 10am sharp when the paddle starts, everyone will enter on the north side of the pier. The south side has a rocky reef that is very shallow and can be dangerous. Depending on how much sand is around, there may be a few rocks on the north side so be cautious.

After about 150 yards, all paddlers will cross under the pier then complete a loop around the end of the pier from south to north. The Ocean Beach Geriatrics surf club will be the safety crew as usual to help guide you. They will be entering the water early so don't get confused and think that's the start of the paddle.

### On The way back in, be sure to stay on the south side of the 24 hour swim zone that is in front of the lifeguard tower ###

Whether you paddle around the pier or simply attend to support clean water, your presence makes an impact. Come on down to check out the sights and join in the group photo around 10:40 or 11am. It's a free event so we hope to see you there!

Do you need a board to paddle at the event?

Well then, it's Ocean Beach Surf and Skate to the rescue! OBSS will be offering their rental soft-top boards free of charge for this event to experienced paddlers. Surfrider is stoked to have the support from OBSS and hopefully this will encourage more people to carpool, bike and take the bus/mass transit to the event. (Bus lines 923 and 35 have a stop at Newport Ave. & Cable Ave. which is three blocks from the event.)

Please note that the paddle around the pier is approximately one mile long and takes people between 20 and 60 minutes to complete. Surfrider Activist/Mom to Finish 'Seattle to San Diego' paddle at the P4CW!!

On July 3rd ocean activist Margo Pellegrino, 43, launched a two month paddling journey on the Pacific Ocean in her outrigger canoe. Beginning in Seattle, she plans to complete her voyage in San Diego at the Surfrider Foundation Paddle For Clean Water on September 12th. During the two months of her journey, she will paddle approximately 1,500 miles making around 60 stops along the West Coast.

Pellegrino is not a full time adventurer. She's simply an environmentally conscious mother and paddling enthusiast who is pushing herself to the limit in the hopes that she can show her children how to make a difference in the world and inspire others to take an active role in the stewardship of our oceans.

She made the similar journeys in the past, paddling 2,000 miles from Miami to Camden, Maine in the summer of 2007. She followed that trip in 2008 with a “short” 500 mile trip from New Jersey’s Long Beach Island to Washington D.C. In 2009 she covered 1,500 miles from Florida’s Atlantic coast around the Gulf of Mexico into New Orleans. With those paddling journeys under her belt, the Pacific coast is just the next coastline to tackle. The colder waters, rockier shorelines, and bigger waves make it her most physically difficult challenge to date.

Coastal paddling journeys are Margo’s way to call attention to the need for healthy oceans. Diego to raise awareness about four key issues facing our oceans: acidification, plastic pollution, overfishing and pollution from storm water runoff. “An effective public education campaign is critical for advancing public policy”, she says. “We need to ensure that a healthy oceans policy isn’t afflicted by legislators noticing a lack of public interest from their constituents.” Her choice of tackling the coasts in a manner that promotes high public visibility is designed to reach the local markets of the 150 million people (half the U.S. population) who either live or work within 25 miles of some part of the U.S. coast.

Margo's journey can be tracked online at www.seattle2sandiego.com

Join us on September 12th in Ocean Beach to welcome Margo and to make a statement for clean water simply by showing up!

Coffee!

One of the best parts of the Paddle For Clean Water is fueling up on some tasty treats before the event. We're looking to have Clif Bars, bagels and cream cheese, bananas, melon, water and COFFEE! Stay tuned for some last-minute additions too.

We are stoked to have Caffé Calabria from North Park providing Aldea Global coffee from Nicaragua. A sweet cocoa aroma paired with a round body and crisp acidity, producing a well balanced cup. Flavors of agave nectar are accompanied with a buttery rich cocoa flavor, and crisp fruit. This Coffee was produced using a ecological mill which minimizes the use of harmful agrochemicals, which are known to leak into rivers and estuaries ultimately finding their way to the ocean. The water used in an eco-mill is a quarter of that used by a traditional milling process. The by-product of this eco-mill is a pulpy substance called mucilage which is then used as organic fertilizer for the coffee farm.

19th Annual Surfrider Foundation Paddle For Clean Water set for September 12th!

Media Contact: Bill Hickman 619-804-6264 or bill@surfriderSD.org

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

19th Annual Surfrider Foundation Paddle For Clean Water set for Ocean Beach San Diego on September 12th

SAN DIEGO, August 2nd 2010 - Beach lovers and ocean enthusiasts unite for clean water! The Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter hosts the 19th Annual Paddle for Clean Water on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010. The event starts with free breakfast at 9 a.m. and features the paddle around the Ocean Beach Pier at 10 a.m.

The paddle around the OB Pier at 10 a.m. features all sorts of paddlecraft – surfboards, bodyboards, kayaks, outrigger canoes, etc. – in a non-competitive paddle out and around the Ocean Beach Pier to raise awareness to pollution problems along San Diego’s coastline. The event will also include breakfast for all paddlers starting at 9 a.m., along with special guest speakers, music, a huge raffle with a new surfboard as the grand prize and a beach cleanup. Over 1,000 beach and ocean lovers are expected to take to the waters off Ocean Beach this year. It’s a free event and promises to be a morning of fun for everyone in the family.

Know Your H2O! Know Your h2o is a program designed to educate people on the link between freshwater management issues and the impact on our oceans, waves, and beaches that will be highlighted at this years event. We advocate for practical and environmentally sound solutions. Through conservation, using climate-appropriate plants, permeable pavement, capturing and reusing "waste" water, and Indirect Potable Reuse (IPR), we can reduce water pollution in the ocean AND improve our drinking water supply.

“Paddling around the Ocean Beach Pier is not mandatory, but expect to have fun either in the water or on the beach. Bring a friend or three and share the stoke during the huge paddle out. Also, people can learn really interesting and useful information, like how to save money through home water conservation,” said Manase Mansur, chair of Surfrider Foundation’s San Diego Chapter.

Schedule of events:
9am: Light breakfast is served
10am: Paddle around the Ocean Beach Pier
11am: Group photo, guest speakers and raffle
9am – Noon: Beach Cleanup

Thanks to Clif Bar for sponsoring the event again this year. More information about the Paddle For Clean Water Festival can be found at www.surfriderSD.org or www.paddle4cleanwater.blogspot.com

Event Recap

Whew, what an event. For the first time in event history, the paddle 'round the pier was 'postponed' til next year because of big waves. There were 8-10+ faces on the sets and some waves were brushing up against the bottom of the pier. At the recommendation of the lifeguards we did not host the group paddle and it turned into the 'surf for clean water' with some of the locals and visitors alike putting on a show.

The festival and awareness event went on. We talked to hundreds of people about border pollution issues in South Bay San Diego County and hosted eco-friendly vendors that had a green impact on the day. The highlights of the day were the afternoon music sets. The bands really ripped it up on the Sustainable Waves solar stage.

Many thanks to the event sponsors one more time: Clif Bar, Gro Solar, Vivix 659 clothing, Stone Brewing Co., Cali Bamboo and 91X. And many thanks to the volunteers, we could not do it without you!

Recycle your flip flops and surfboards here!

In addition to the Clif Bar Wrapper Challenge, there are two other great ways to recycle items that usually go to the landfill: flip flops and surfboards.

Flip Flops! Bring your old flip flops to donate to StyleSubstanceSoul.com's Formerly Flip Flops recycling campaign. They'll be on hand to collect old flip flops and will also be selling funky jewelry made from old flip flops by the award-winning UniquEco, with proceeds helping to build a sustainable economy in Nairobi, Africa.

Surfboards! ReRip.com will be at the event to collect your used, broken or beat down surfboard. They will find a way to reuse it or will have it grinded down into construction materials. Surfboard manufacturing can be a dirty business so the more we can reduce, reuse, rerip and recycle surfboard the better off for the environment and everyone.

As Jack Johnson likes to remind the kids: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!

Clif Bar Wrapper Challenge!

The person with the most wrappers at the Paddle for Clean Water on 9/13 will receive a super cool gift from Clif Bar, all you have to do is bring your wrappers to the Clif Bar booth. Now get to collecting!

Clif Bar's Wrapper Challenge! Calling all recyclers: In conjunction with the Paddle for Clean Water, Clif Bar is hosting a "Wrapper Challenge". Not the beat-box kind but the material that wraps your delicious Clif Bars! Every year millions of non–recyclable energy bar wrappers end up in our landfills. In response to this tremendous waste of resources, TerraCycle, along with founding sponsor Clif Bar is committed to finding a new use for used wrappers. These wrappers are converted to cool things like backpacks, tote bags and purses. Pretty cool!

All energy, granola, nutrition, cereal and protein bars with an inner foil lining are acceptable - examples of approved wrappers are included below. We cannot accept wrappers that do not have the foil lining or candy wrappers. Visit www.terracycle.net for more info.

Do you need a board to paddle at the event?

Well then, it's Ocean Beach Surf and Skate to the rescue! OBSS will be offering their rental soft-top boards free of charge for this event. Surfrider is stoked to have the support from OBSS and hopefully this will encourage more people to carpool, bike and take the bus/mass transit to the event.

Remember to support your local surf shop!

Volunteers Make This Thing Work!

As a volunteer-based non-profit organization Surfrider relies on help from all sorts of people. For example, beach cleanups would not be the big success they are if five or ten people show up. We are constantly impressed to see over 100 people coming out for a couple of hours on a Saturday to help keep our community clean.

The Paddle For Clean Water Festival takes lots of behind the scenes help so I wanted to thank a couple of professionals that have been donating their time, Dersu Rhodes and Christy Fuson.

Dersu Rhodes is a freelance designer that created the killer artwork for the event that you see on the poster, postcards, t-shirt, reusable cups, etc. Dersu is from Whitefish Montana and lives in Cardiff. He loves to travel, surf, snowboard, hike
currently works as a freelance designer in the surf/skate industry. For more information please visit www.dersu.carbonmade.com

Christy Fuston helped to create some amazing site maps for the event. I was pleasantly surprised to see how she worked with our scribbled site maps from the past to create something that looks great and we can use for many years. Fuston Creative is a full-service design studio in San Diego providing art direction, graphic design, and branding. For more information please visit www.fustoncreative.com

Special thanks also go out to Lenora Lostaunau for her help planning the event throughout. We still need volunteers to help the day-of the event on Sunday 9/13.

Music Lineup Announced!

The past two years we have been honored to host lots of great bands at the Festival that follows the Paddle in the morning. But, with all due respect, we think this is the hottest lineup yet with great local bands and an irie reggae vibe for the afternoon on 9/13:

Iration!

With influences stretching through multiple genres, Iration’s style defies categorization. They have called their sound “New Roots”, taking roots reggae and giving it a modern twist. Elements of dub stand at the forefront of Iration’s sound. Joe and Adam’s rhythmic drum and bass are mixed with Micah and Catlin’s rocking guitars and Cayson’s distinctive keyboard/synth. The music is dubbed by King to create Iration’s signature sound. Three lead vocalists in Catlin, Kai and Micah give each song its own unique feeling. Any way you cut it, this band is hot so be sure to catch their set. Visit www.IrationMusic.com for more.

Tribal Seeds!

With heavy influence from Bob Marley, Steel Pulse, and Midnite, this new and unique group brings a refreshing rock vibe to roots style reggae music. Spiritually driven and musically talented, Tribal Seeds have created an art form for rebel music enthusiast! With comparisons to the legendary group, The Police, they bring an authentic sound that reaches a broad demographic.

The group is headed by two brothers, both raised playing instruments since early childhood in San Diego. The lead singer Steven writes the lyrics for the group, and his brother Tony-Ray along with the band produces all their music. The final product is an original collection of songs for their debut album ..Youth RebelLion.. released under the 1980 Entertainment label. They have toured throughout North America as well as Mexico and Hawaii, and have shared the stage with Matisyahu, The Wailers and Gregory Issacs. Experience them live on tour in 2007 with other headliners including Barrington Levy, Yellowman, Israel Vibrations, Tanya Stephens, Elan and many others. What a killer band to have playing right next to the beach!! Visit www.TribalSeeds.net for more.

C$ and The Players Inc.!

Formally schooled on trumpet since 6th grade, Christofer "C-Money" Welter played throughout high school, and into a one-year completion program, with a Music Education major at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. After a year in the formal education sector, Christofer left those confines to join the live touring band John Brown's Body (1998). Playing close to 175 shows a year all around the USA for 8 years with JBB, "C-Money" was asked to join one of the independent scenes infamous, and pollstars top 50 touring bands -Slightly Stoopid! A full-time trumpet, keyboard player and vocalist since 2006, Christofer "C-Money" Welter continues to tour with Slightly Stoopid full-time to the tune of about 200+ shows a year.

Christofer formed The Player’s Inc in 2004 as a side project for touring musicians from Boston who wanted to play gigs when off the road from touring with their "main" bands. They took popular dub and hip-hop tunes and did versions where the horn players took the role of "MCs". They infused the structure of jazz through the eyes of hip-hop. There is a studio album set out in 2009 called "Family Business.” Keep your eyes and ears open! Visit www.myspace.com/playersinc for more.

Pullman Standard!

Pullman Standard is a four-piece group from Southern California that was created by singer/songwriter Timothy Daniels in the summer of 2007. Daniels' ambition was to push forward with a new creative outlook on his own musical abilities, which broke ground for the cabaret, burlesque rock sound and performance that the band performs today.

Shortly after Daniels had established himself as a solo acoustic act, he began to collaborate and perform as a duo with drummer Dale Peters. They began to experiment with ways of maintaining the upbeat yet intimate acoustic vibe, while transforming into a sound that would call for more band members. Longtime friend and musician Austin Smith was introduced as the bassist of Pullman Standard mid-2008. The final piece of the puzzle was added in March, 2009, with guitarist/pianist Kevin Wolfe, who added the extra push needed to give the band its full live sound.

Pullman Standard was the recent winner of the "Your Song for San Diego" contest sponsored by CW6, Citybeat, KPRI and 91X! Visit www.myspace.com/pullmanstandard

The Professors!

SurfriderSD is stoked to have The Professors back for third year at the Paddle For Clean Water Festival. Not content to just be another surf band, The Professors are pushing the envelope of traditional surf music. There are a wide variety of styles here. In addition to straight up surf tunes, you can find elements '60s bossa nova, rockabilly, spaghetti westerns, reggae, and classic rock. It's as if you took The Ventures, Henry Mancini, Brian Setzer, Ennio Morricone, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and Radiohead; threw them into a blender, and pushed all the buttons down at the same time without the lid on. Get there early and don't miss their set. Visit www.myspace.com/theprofessorslounge for more.

Glassed-on fins are hand-foiled from bamboo scraps from when we make the stringers.

The person with the most wrappers at the Paddle for Clean Water on 9/13 will receive a super cool gift from Clif Bar, all you have to do is bring your wrappers to the Clif Bar booth. Now get to collecting!

Eco-Friendly Vendors Wanted!

Talk about a prime location, this event is right next to the sand in Ocean Beach! Surfrider is making every effort to have the event be zero waste from a solar powered sound stage to comprehensive recycling and analyzing what is used.

Over one thousand beach/ocean lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts took to the waters of Ocean Beach at last year’s San Diego event and the festival draws thousands more. There are several sponsorship opportunities available to you for this amazing event that continues to grow in attendance and popularity each year. Sponsorships secure your piece of the action and help offset costs. That makes it possible to keep The Paddle for Clean Water a free event while still raising money to continue spreading environmental awareness locally.

Surfrider charges a flat booth fee for all vendors. The fee for food vendors is $150. The fee for non-food vendors is $125. This fee is due September 1, 2009. No commission is due to Surfrider at the completion of the event. For this flat fee, vendors receive the following:
- A chunk of prime real estate close to the beach at the event. All spaces are approximately 10’ x 10’. If you are interested in a larger space, please mark the size of the booth you would prefer in the space provided on the application.
- Four drink tickets per booth

All participating vendors will be required to provide their own canopy, table, chairs, and any display equipment needed for their spaces.

The 18th Annual Paddle is coming on Sept. 13th 2009!!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

18th Annual Paddle For Clean Water Festival set for Ocean Beach San Diego on September 13th

SAN DIEGO, July 10, 2009 - Beach lovers and ocean enthusiasts unite for clean water! The Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter hosts the 18th Annual Paddle for Clean Water Festival presented by Clif Bar on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009. The event starts with free breakfast at 9 a.m., features a paddle around the Ocean Beach Pier at 10 a.m., then the festival continues until 5 p.m. at the Ocean Beach Pier parking lot.

This 18th year of the Paddle for Clean Water Festival presented by Clif Bar promises a full day of fun for everyone. The Paddle For Clean Water Festival will feature booths highlighting environmental awareness and action, local artists and eco-friendly vendor; free massages; free surf lessons, a free surfboard demo from Holeman Surf Designs, a kids’ fun area featuring arts and crafts activities, food, great bands and a Stone Brew beer garden for folks age 21 and over.

The event will also include breakfast for all paddlers starting at 9 a.m., along with special guest speakers, live music, a huge raffle with a Holeman Surf Designs surfboard as the grand prize, a beach cleanup, and bands all afternoon.

The decline of near-shore water quality remains one of the biggest threats to our world’s beaches and coastlines. In addition to destroying marine habitats, it poses a significant risk to the health and welfare of beachgoers. Two local issues will be highlighted at the event this year:

* No B.S. - The No Border Sewage coalition to clean up the waters around the Mexico border
* San Diego’s water supply and how it relates to the marine environment – Know Your H2O!

Over 1,000 beach and ocean lovers took to the waters off Ocean Beach at last year’s San Diego event and 2,500 are expected for the festival this year.

“Whether you paddle or not, the Paddle for Clean Water Festival is always a fun way for people to get involved, and a great place to get the latest information on local coastal environmental issues,” said Scott Harrison, chair of Surfrider Foundation’s San Diego Chapter.

Schedule of events:
9am: Light breakfast is served
10am: Paddle around the OB Pier
11am: Group photo, guest speakers and raffle
11:30am: Live music begins
5:00pm: Festival ends

Surfrider is making every effort to have the event be zero waste - from a solar powered sound stage to comprehensive recycling and analyzing what will be used at the event. Please walk, bike, take public transport or carpool to the event. Visit www.sdcommute.com or www.icarpool.com for more information.

Thanks for making the 17th Annual Paddle For Clean Water a success!

The 17th annual Paddle for Clean Water rallied hundreds of San Diego ocean lovers to paddle around the Ocean Beach Pier and demand clean water. This year was the second with a festival event that included live music, local artists, food and more. The Silent Comedy, One Drop, The Professors and Shaka Buku all played great music sets.

Local news estimated over 1500 people attended the event which generated great awareness for the federal toll road hearing and SurfriderSD’s newest campaign, Know Your H20. Surfrider would like to thank Clif Bar for being the title sponsor along with Stone Brewing Co. and Holeman Surf designs for their support. Many thanks to all of the volunteers that helped to plan and staff the event as well as everyone that turned out on Sunday - we could not have done it without your support!

What exactly is the Surfrider Foundation Paddle For Clean Water?

The Surfrider Foundation Paddle For Clean water is a gathering of the tribe, so to speak. It's a chance for everyone to come together once a year and raise awareness for clean water issues that San Diego faces. This year the focus is on stopping the ill-planned toll road through San Onofre State Park and raising awareness of fresh water issues that impact our local coastal waters.

The centerpiece of the day is the paddle around the OB Pier. It's scheduled to start at 10am so don't be late! The event features all sorts of human-powered paddlecraft – surfboards, bodyboards, kayaks, outrigger canoes, etc. – in a non-competitive paddle out and around the Ocean Beach Pier.

If you don't have a board but still want to paddle or if you would like to take public transport to OB, get there early as we will have about 30 boards to loan from our friends at Ocean Beach Surf Shop! The paddle around the pier is approx. 3/4 of a mile and takes people between 15 and 45 minutes to complete. Pace yourself, take it easy and enjoy the great vibes!

Even if you don't paddle we invite you to come enjoy the event and help make a difference. Immediately after the paddle there will be a 'Save Trestles' group photo, words from San Diego City Councilmembers Donna Frye and Kevin Faulconer and a big raffle.

Bands all afternoon along with eco-friendly vendors and info from other great organizations like our friends at San Diego Coastkeeper!

Live Music in the Afternoon from Silent Comedy, One Drop, The Professors and Shaka Buku!

Check out this great lineup including some of San Diego's best bands:

THE SILENT COMEDY!!!
“The Silent Comedy was started with two goals: To be a recording project that could involve many of our musician friends, and to be an outlet for this Americana material we had been writing, ” J. John explains. “We didn’t really intend for it to be a live band at all. One thing led to another, and we needed to play a show that Dehra Dun was unavailable for, so we decided to give it a shot.” I. Forbes, who had played violin with Dehra Dun, and longtime friend J. Michael were enlisted to help with the first show. “After that, things just took off.” Remembers J. Michael.

The band changed from its original idea of a fluid lineup and a strict ‘recording only’ vision to a five piece core with a variety of guests.
In addition to a cast of guest performers, The Silent Comedy is known for its frequent instrument changes, and lively stage antics. Visit www.myspace.com/thesilentcomedy for some of their songs. Their live show has become their defining characteristic so be part of the experience at the Paddle For Clean Water Festival.

ONE DROP!!!
One Drop is a Roots Rock Reggae band with James Alger (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Melodica), Bart Neglia (Lead Guitar, Back up Vocals) Art Gener (Bass) and John Mobley (Drums)

One Drop’s music embraces the California Beach Culture it emerges from. Growing up in an ethnic diverse area saturated with colorful sounds ranging from Reggae , R&B to Rock, the group is able to embrace the beautiful qualities of these genres and reproduce it in a unique style. Check out www.myspace.com/onedropreggae for some of their songs and be sure to catch their set on 9/14 in OB.

THE PROFESSORS!!!
Visit www.myspace.com/theprofessorslounge

SHAKA BUKU!!!

Directly influenced by the simplicity and social consciousness of Bob Marley, the funk and groove of Stevie Wonder and the power and edge of Led Zeppelin. Shaka Buku shares a timeless and powerful message, which is based on the wisdom and foundation of Buddhist teachings and spiritual mentors such as Mahatma Ghandi, Shakyamuni Buddha, Martin Luther King Jr. and Japanese Philosopher/ Educator Daisaku Ikeda. Dubbed "Hands down the funkiest Reggae band on the planet" by Sound Connection this band delivers a crowd shakin mix of Reggae, Rock, Funk, Jazz & Hip Hop. The band takes its stage moniker from a Japanese Buddhist term which loosely translates to the goal of their music "To remove suffering and bring happiness to all people by awakening them to their inherent greatness." While such a lofty goal might prove daunting to most, Shaka Buku attacks it with pure passion. Check out www.myspace.com/shakabuku

Thanks to support from local businesses this is our largest raffle of the year.

The grand prize is a new Holeman Surf Designs surfboard!!! The Retro Fish is a tribute to the San Diego surf culture. Flat deck, down rails, low rocker, and wood keel fins. Breakfast for all paddlers!

Be sure to arrive at 9am for some tasty treats to start your day. Clif Bar is the event sponsor so there will be a nice selection of energy bars to fuel you up. Jungle Java, right on Newport Ave near the pier, is donating coffee again this year. Many thanks! Einstein Bros. is graciously donating bagels and cream cheese for the event. There will also be lots of bananas, apple juice, chocolate soy milk and more!

Take the Bus or Carpool

If you are coming from outside of Ocean Beach be sure to carpool or take public transport if you can.

San Diego MTS Route 35 and Route 923 go to OB. The 35 departs from Old Town while the 923 comes from downtown San Diego through parts of Point Loma to OB.

I don't think you are officially allowed to bring surfboards on the bus but most drivers are sympathetic, especially if you try to keep it low profile. We will have a limited supply of boards to loan for the event, arrive early to secure one if you are interested.

Surfboard Demos- Test Ride Modern and Classic Shapes

Come out to the Paddle For Clean Water and test ride a variety of boards from Holeman Surf Designs and Rainbow Surfrboards.

Shaper JP Holeman will be on hand for feedback on his shapes. His wife Andrea will be there with her unique jewelry and accessories made from recycled surfboard resin.

Used Surfboard Recycling from rerip.com

Wrap your head around this: rather than sending that snapped surfboard off to the landfill you could give it to rerip.com or HomeblownUS to be recycled and made into new materials.

Surfboard manufacturing can be a dirty business so the more we can reduce, reuse, rerip and recycle surfboard the better off for the environment and everyone.

This is one of the first chances to drop off boards in any condition to have them be recycled. Look for the rerip.com booth at the event.

The person that brings in the most used boards for recycling gets a free stand-up-paddle blank from Biofoam/HomeblownUS!!

Free Massages!!

Yes, you read that right: FREE MASSAGES!!

Body Mind College will be bringing out a few practitioners for free table and chair massage at the Paddle Festival.

Founded in 1988, Body Mind College is the first massage school of its kind, and has created a training program unlike anything available today. Take a moment to imagine a massage school where learning isn't limited to your mind, it is expanded to your experience; a place where learning means to embody and experience knowledge on all levels; a place where you are nurtured and supported to grow and learn and are surrounded by a community of like minded people; a place where you can feel heard; a place where you can find inspiration. This is what we offer to our students at Body Mind College. We'd love the opportunity to share this with you. www.bodymindcollege.com

Free Surf Lessons!!

We are excited to be offering free surf lessons for the public at the Paddle For Clean Water this year.

Trained professional instructors from Pacific Beach Surf Shop and Pacific Beach School will be on hand for two free sessions: 11:30 to 12:30 or 12:45-1:45. There are 20 slots open for each session so arrive early to sign up for them.
